Lower Your Cholesterol
Post date: December 29th, 2009
Many of us have a higher cholesterol reading than we would like, but does that mean we will eat nothing but lettuce for the rest of our lives? Of course not! Sensible eating can also be nutritious and enjoyable, but remember that a food advertised as cholesterol-free may be bad for your cholesterol! Yes, the cholesterol you eat is not the problem, it is what your body does with the food that is of concern.
You should shop for foods that are low in saturated fat and trans-fat, and if you want to be sure of not adding to your cholesterol problem, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
In fact, a vegetarian diet is very good for lowering cholesterol. That doesn’t mean we need to become vegetarians, but consider aspects of such a diet more often when you are shopping for food and cooking.
And what are healthy levels of cholesterol? Generally, a reading in excess of 200 mg/dL is considered high, so we should aim for a level below that.
Green Tea has been claimed to have beneficial results upon our cholesterol. Specifically, it has been said that green tea extracts can both lower LDL cholesterol and at the same time raise the HDL cholesterol levels. For the latest news on this topic, click here.
Niacin, also known as nicotinic acid, is a B vitamin that has claims to improving our cholesterol levels. It is said to lower the levels of LDL cholesterol and fats in our bodies when taken in large doses, as well as raising the HDL cholesterol level in our body. It is found in dairy products, poultry, fish, lean meats, nuts, and eggs. Legumes and enriched breads and cereals also supply some niacin.
Though niacin can also be bought as a vitamin supplement without a doctor’s approval, it is advised that you seek advice from a doctor before buying it, as it can have very serious side-effects. For the latest niacin news, click here.
